David E.C. Gettis

“He who walks with integrity walks securely.”
King Solomon

At the age of 15, David Gettis was hired by a land surveyor, who trained and trusted David to lead a field crew, draft and read plans, and manage the firm’s computer and network systems. During law school, David launched a computer business, pounding the pavement to build a clientele of small businesses who came to rely on his friendly and prompt service. After deciding to leave his native Canada to practice law in California, David toured the Golden State in his pickup, simultaneously looking for work and interviewing well-known lawyers about their experiences in the law. These formative learning experiences helped to instill in David a love for learning and adventure that have served him well in partnering with clients to overcome legal challenges of all shapes and sizes.

For the first six years of his practice, David served as in-house General Counsel to a San Diego-based business conglomerate that included a regional wireless telecommunications network, a healthcare facility, and 15 other businesses. In this role, David enjoyed serving and learning from the business leaders, finding ways to minimize their risks while being attentive to their practical needs and interests.

David has achieved the coveted Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Rating of AV Preeminent®, which is the highest peer rating standard. This is given to attorneys who are ranked at the highest level of professional excellence for their legal expertise, communication skills, and ethical standards by their peers.

David continues to serve his business clients, and in 2005, he expanded into the field of insurance law. Today, David litigates complex insurance matters nationwide. He savors the intellectual challenge of complex insurance coverage matters, the plain hard work of sorting through massive document productions to hone in on the key facts, and the art of crafting a winning litigation strategy. In 2009, David had the opportunity to help create new law in this area, drafting an appellate brief that led to the favorable and landmark decision of Supervalu, Inc. v. Wexford Underwriting Managers, Inc., et al.

After several trips to various countries in Latin America, David decided to make his home there, and lived in San José, Costa Rica for nearly three years. He is fluent in Spanish.
